Recently we attended the Missouri Milk Food and Environmental Health Association (MMFEHA) awards conference, to present an award and scholarship. Part of our mission includes recognizing and supporting individuals who are making a difference in the field of environmental health, and so we were glad to be able to attend this year’s awards banquet because there were several people we needed to recognize.
Dr. Mike Fletcher at Missouri Southern State University has helped develop the first accredited environmental health degree in the state of Missouri. He has worked tirelessly for years, and despite some adversity and funding issues from the state, has managed to build an excellent program that has enrollment of more than 40 students. Before my father passed away, he wanted to be sure that the foundation recognized Dr. Fletcher for the hard work he has done, and encouraged him to keep it up, as it is making a big difference in Missouri.
We were pleased to honor Dr. Fletcher with the Hainline Award for Outstanding Contributions to Environmental Public Health.
Haley Velez is a senior at Missouri Southern State University working towards an environmental public health degree. At the recommendation of the MSSU scholarship selection committee, we were pleased to present Haley with the first Hainline Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $600 to continue her studies. We look forward to seeing the great things she will accomplish in the field.
It was a pleasant surprise to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Joe Hainline. My mom Darleen accepted the award, and it was great to see how much my dad meant to everyone at the conference. Thank you to MMFEHA for your encouragement and honoring of my father’s achievements.
